Generative AI presents a new phase in humanity’s technological journey. It’s impact will be at least as profound as the PC and World Wide Web in the 1990s. Those individuals, organizations, societies that master its use fastest will have a profound leg up over those that lag.
My mission is to make sure that the “good guys” win this race, moving faster and more aggressively to harness generative AI and related technologies in the employ of their missions.
Who are the good guys? The free societies of the world and especially those within those society who stand for the public good (e.g. research, education, public accountability and transparency) or tackle tricky societal challenges.
How I’m doing that:
Right now, my focus is on Ukraine - supporting innovation in wartime and “winning the peace”
Over the next five years, I’m looking to build (reach out to discuss in more depth…)
What of AI Safety and Ethics? Yes, but how? Not by limiting adoption by those most concerned with ethics and rights, but by getting our hands dirty using AI. I believe strongly that the best tools for ethical and safe AI will themselves be algorithmic, and that you have to be in the arena to know what the real dangers are.
What of AGI and the Singularity? Honestly, I don’t know. But I have a sense that one of the best contributions we can make to alignment with human flourishing is to make sure that those deploying the cutting edge of pre-AGI AIs are the “good guys” (see above 👆)
